Is a box fan and air filter a good alternative for an air purifier?

I won’t pay for an expensive air purifier, for most of the part, will this cheap alternative do most of it? Do you think this diy air purifier is better than the small air purifier that sells for ? Have you guys try this concept and how did it work for you?

Haven’t tried it because it should yield similar result as a whole-house filter in your HVAC unit but with much lower efficiency (localized use for large sized particulate contaminants).
It really depends on what you are trying to do. If you want to cut down on cat hair in your home or sawdust in a shop, sure, it would help, but if you want to remove the finer particles (mold spores, allergens, etc) you need to use something that was designed specifically for that purpose.
yep have the same set up in my shop,
works great
Yes, I do it in my home during allergy season with great results. A couple of tips, though; Some filters are better than others and that is reflected in the cost. "Filtrete" brand works best so far in my home. Second, place the filter on the intake side of the fan so that air is ‘pulled’ through and into it. Lastly, use duct tape to cover any gaps around the filter so that air can’t bypass it into the fan.
