2 Cold Air Intake Mods: My Dodge Ram 5.9L & Durango 4.7L
Did a couple of air intake mods to my 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab 5.9L 2WD and my 2001 Dodge Durango SLT 4.7L 4×4.. -The 99 Dodge Ram, I went with an old-school style ‘Mopar Performance’ cast 12 3/4 in. diameter by 2 3/4 in. filter height air cleaner from Summit Racing and a Spectre valve cover filter. Only real issue was modifying the 1/4-20 threaded straight rod provided with the right amount of bend from the throttle body screw point offset to the lid hole so the wingnut would catch along with cutting it down in height to make it work.. -The 01 Durango, I went with a twin/dual snorkel style cold air intake with Spectre filters I found on eBay and a 3 inch ‘ricer’ filter for the intake vacuum tube. Very simple to install. Both work Great for each particular style intake. For exhaust, both vehicles have Magnaflow cat converters with Flowmaster mufflers.

@mobsterbillyjoe Thanks!
A mechanic recommended that cause there was no place for it to hook up to that style air cleaner..
@956hitman I found that on eBay. No real name brand.. Just do a search on eBay under ‘Durango dual air intake’ and it should come up.
@mobsterbillyjoe Oh, you meant the ‘teeth’ on the front grill??
I had flames at one time but changed to the teeth instead – I may go back to the flames..
@rvr2 thats it. couldt think of the name.
it wuld be cool t get something like a black chrome bilit grille under that.
@mobsterbillyjoe Oh Yeah! That Would look Cool!
Thanks!
why would you filter something coming out
@thebeastful2012 Because there was no place on the air cleaner to run the valve cover hose and actually there is suction on that valve cover.
The idea is to suck fumes out of the passenger side (PVC valve) which sucks clean air in the driver’s side … crossflow.
If you’ve got the time and money then i say try to find a ram air hood for your durango. that would help flow cold air into the engine bay. i like the dual intake though I’ve seen it online before. i might try making something like that myself sometime!
@aaminjoshi91 I like that idea about the Ram Air hood..
That would look Sharp!
@rvr2 it would look really sharp. it would give it that off road sports car type look you know? A cross between street/strip and the off road. I’d like to buy one when i get some money then do a dual air intake like your’s!
which one is faster, the ram or durango? haha
@dodgeramkx250 LOL! Yeah, the Ram is..
The Durango’s 4×4 doesn’t help speed wise {:{)
maybe add the K&N filter instead of the stock filter?
@FordF350Baby Definitely!
@ rvr2 Cool vid man:)
@FordF350Baby Thanks!
how does that two wheel drive ram handle in the winter?
@2010DodgeRam1500Hemi
It handles ok .. Just does more slippin n slidin. LOL
@rvr2 oh i bet lol i was thinking about buyin a 2001 ram its got 2 wheel drive and i kinda dont like that but i was hopen maybe i could just dump some sand bags in the bed and that would work lol
@2010DodgeRam1500Hemi That’ll work!!
We don’t get a whole lot of snow here and I don’t do much off roadin so to me, yeah that’s good enough..
@rvr2 yea the area i live in gets a lot of snow but there isnt really anywhere near by to go off roading just a lot of farm land lol
hey bud, just wondering trying to help you out.. i see you put the old school type air filter on top looks nice my thoughts are that its prob getting a lot of engine heat u know hot air sucking in. did u notice any diff in ur engine temp?? plus ur teeth are cool i used to have flames on my old 2004 ram which blocks some air flow in.. maybe another food for thought.. i have a 2008 ram 5.7L with cai and throttle body and exuast.. and i wanna get a ram air hood also it woulddefhelp
@RamBoy660 I like those ideas.. Thanks!
I haven’t seen any temperature difference at all to be honest.. It seems to have better take-off power than before IMO..
I’d Love to put a ram-air hood it – They are just out of my price range currently..
Thanks Again!
@2010DodgeRam1500Hemi
I have a 99 Ram 5.9Liter with only Two-wheel drive. First winter I was stuck everywhere, I bought some good studded tires and put 160 pounds worth of sandbags in the very rear near the tailgate. Ive been blowing threw the North Dakota snow and Ice no problem what so ever now. You get a feel for it and know how to play the throttle and so it wont get too sideways if your respectable to it.
@sethcorn Thanks! Sounds like a blast!
We don’t get a whole lot of snow but when we do, I have a GR8 Time!
